Power Plant Technician

Run the power. Power Plant Technicians operate and maintain the equipment that generates electricity — turbines, generators, boilers, control systems. NERC-regulated, 24/7 work with premium pay across the trade.

Power Plant Technician goes by many names

On KinTrades, all of these job titles route to the Power Plant Technician trade — so search any of them and you'll find matching work.

Day to day on the job

Power Plant Techs split between operations (running the plant from the control room) and maintenance (servicing turbines, generators, and supporting equipment). The work runs 24/7 in shifts — nights, weekends, and holidays are part of the deal. NERC compliance is mandatory.

Specializations diverge by plant type. Gas Turbine Techs work natural-gas combined-cycle plants — the most common new build. Nuclear Plant Techs work the highest-paid plants — but require multi-year qualification under NRC oversight. Coal Plant Techs work boiler-driven generation. Hydro Techs work dam-based hydroelectric facilities.

Most power plant techs work for utilities (Dominion, Duke, Pepco) or independent power producers. The work pays well with strong benefits and pension because the talent pool is small and the regulatory burden is high.

How you move up as a Power Plant Tech

NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) is the federal regulator. NERC System Operator certification is required for control-room work on bulk electric systems. BLS OES 51-8013, May 2024.

Paths into the Power Plant Technician trade

Pre-apprenticeship · 2 years

Community College Energy / Power Plant Programs

2-year energy associate programs at NoVA CC, Wake Tech, Cape Fear CC. Coursework covers electrical theory, power systems, instrumentation. FastForward VA covers tuition.

Direct hire · 1-2 years training

Utility Operator-in-Training Programs

Major utilities (Dominion, Duke Energy) hire directly into structured Operator-in-Training programs. Strong veteran preference for nuclear plant operations.

Veterans direct path

Navy Nuclear Operator → Civilian Nuclear

Navy nuclear operators (Machinist's Mate Nuclear, Electrician's Mate Nuclear, Electronics Technician Nuclear) crosswalk directly into civilian nuclear-plant work — one of the strongest mil-to-civilian transitions in skilled trades.

Stackable credentials

Certifications that help

NERC System Operator certifications, Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) for nuclear, NFPA 70E, ISA-CCST for I&C work, CMRP for senior maintenance, engineering degree for senior engineer track.

Common pathways into Power Plant Technician work

KinTrades welcomes Power Plant Technician workers from every walk of life. Whether you're a veteran transitioning out of service, a student planning your career, or someone returning to work — there's a clear path in.

Veterans

Power Plant work is one of the strongest civilian destinations for veterans. Army 12P Prime Power Production Specialist directly transfers.

Navy nuclear ratings (MMN, EMN, ETN) crosswalk to civilian nuclear plants — Dominion North Anna, Surry, Calvert Cliffs all actively recruit Navy nuclear veterans. Air Force 3E0X2 Electrical Power Production covers civilian power production directly.

The GI Bill covers NERC and Senior Reactor Operator training programs.

High School Students

Power plant work generally requires 2-year CC associate degree before utility hire. Pell-eligible energy programs at NoVA CC, Wake Tech, Cape Fear CC are the standard pathway.

Major utilities (Dominion, Duke Energy) recruit directly from CC programs.

Direct from HS is uncommon.

Second Chance

Power plant work runs formal background checks because of NERC critical-infrastructure regulations and 24/7 facility access.

Nuclear plant access requires DOE/NRC clearance and multi-year background investigation.

Most utility positions run formal background screening — an 8-10 year clean record is typically required for site access.
