Millwrights uncrate, set, level, and align industrial machinery. The work splits between new-equipment installation (precision rigging, anchoring to foundations) and ongoing maintenance (vibration analysis, laser shaft alignment, gearbox replacement).
Specializations diverge by industry. Industrial Plant Millwrights work manufacturing facilities. Power Plant Millwrights work turbines and generators — premium pay. Mining/Quarry Millwrights work crushers and conveyors. The trade overlaps with industrial mechanic work but pays better for the alignment specialty.
Most millwrights work for industrial contractors, in-house plant maintenance teams, or specialty rigging firms. UBC Millwrights apprenticeships are the strongest union path; ABC covers the open-shop equivalent.
