HVAC Technician

Service residential and commercial heating and cooling systems — diagnose problems, repair compressors, recharge refrigerant, replace boards and controls. The most reliably hiring of the HVAC roles, with steady year-round demand from maintenance contracts.

HVAC Technician goes by many names

On KinTrades, all of these job titles route to the HVAC Technician trade — so search any of them and you'll find matching work.

Day to day on the job

An HVAC Technician spends most days diagnosing — figuring out why the system in front of you isn't doing what the customer expected. A no-cool call in July. A boiler short-cycling in January. A heat pump that froze up overnight. Most days are a mix of preventive-maintenance contracts and trouble calls, all driven from a service truck and a tablet.

Specializations diverge. A Service Technician runs a route — eight to twelve calls a day in residential, four to eight in commercial. A Light Commercial Tech works rooftop units (RTUs) and packaged systems on small businesses. A Senior / Lead Tech handles complex troubleshooting, mentors apprentices, and runs the harder jobs.

Most HVAC techs work for service contractors — small local shops, regional service brands, or large national franchises. Many transition to in-house facilities roles at hospitals, hotels, and large office buildings after building service experience. Pay scales with EPA 608 (entry), NATE specialty certs, and union/master licensure.

How you move up as an HVAC Tech

Most HVAC techs progress through certification rather than formal apprenticeship — EPA 608 is mandatory, NATE certifications stack on top. Union HVAC techs go through UA Locals; open-shop techs typically come up through service contractors and ABC apprenticeships. BLS OES 49-9021, May 2024.
