Day to day on the job
Fire Sprinkler Technicians install new sprinkler systems on commercial construction, replace heads and risers in existing buildings, and run NFPA 25 inspections that every commercial property has to do annually. The work splits into three lanes: installation, inspection & testing (ITM), and design / layout.
An Installer / Sprinkler Fitter is on construction sites laying out and assembling the system. An Inspector (NICET ITM) does the recurring annual and quarterly tests required for the building to keep its certificate of occupancy. A Designer / Layout Tech (NICET WBL) draws the systems on CAD before they get built — typically Level III in most states is a licensed designer credential.
The trade is small but stable. Every commercial building, school, hotel, and warehouse in the country has sprinklers and needs them maintained. Demand is steady; getting in the door usually starts with a UA Local 669 apprenticeship or an ABC sprinkler-fitting program.
